Emotional Healing from Burn Centers and Family Connections

Burn victims need to acquire treatment through one of the available burn centers, in order to get back into their daily activities, along with the support of family and friends. Burn centers specialize in helping burn patients heal completely in both ways, physically and emotionally. Family members will also play a vital part in the emotional healing of the burn patient. When the burn centers and the family work in combination, the burn victim can return to their normal lives much faster and more effectively.

Family members and friends can help in the emotional healing process, even though the burn centers are necessary to heal the physical aspects associated. The support system of the family shouldn’t be discounted, as they will be an important emotional connection during this time. When you have members of your family nearby during the healing process, it builds relationship bonds and comforts you in ways that doctors cannot. Most of the burn centers will employ experts that will help with the emotional healing, but nothing can take the place of having the family and friends support system.

Physical pain can come from transporting the burn victim, surgeries like skin grafting and changing the burn dressings. Treatment for the burn injury starts with cleaning the skin, which can be painful at first. After the cleansing is complete, the medications will be placed over the top of the burns. Lastly, the dressings will be applied to the wound to protect against infection. The medical personnel in the burn centers will change them frequently and some patients experience pain during the redressing process. To control the physical danger of infections, the wound care of the burn is vital and an intravenous line may be used to replace some lost fluids, if necessary. An increase in fluid intake will be sufficient for the patient will smaller burns. These are all areas of the physical healing within the burn centers, but the emotional healing can be more complex.

Fears, anxiety and emotional pain will be a few of the responses that occur with patients in burn centers or at home. These types of extreme emotions can come from the effects of scarring and disfiguration, as well as the pain that comes from the dressings and skin grafting procedures. Many times when the burns require grafting and physical changes to the appearance, patients can become introverted and self-conscious. The self-esteem can be damaged, as well as the physical look of the burn location. Getting past the feelings of fear and anxiety are just as much a part of the healing process as the actual healing of the wound. Pain medications can relieve the physical discomfort, but the family can help immensely when dealing with the emotional pain of the processes. Just having someone there and not feeling alone, can do wonders for the burn victims in the burn centers. Getting the burn victim back to their normal lives will entail both physical and emotional healing. The family members can pick up some of the responsibilities of emotional wellness, while the burn centers will fill in all of the necessary physical assistance.
