The American Burn Association’s contribution to burn care

The American Burn Association is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to improve the lives of all people affected by burn injuries. They do this specifically by giving care to burn patients, and they also provide education. Their additional services include giving education related to burn care and developing and disseminating relevant research. Wherever relevant, the Association provides advocacy on issues related to the treatment, care, and health matters for burn patients. The members of the American Burn Association dedicate their resources and efforts to supporting burn victims by making sure that they get the required care and treatment. The American Burn Association has over 3500 members spread across the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and Latin America who enable it to work towards the one common global goal of educating people on burn injury related issues.

They periodically will roll out prevention programs in collaboration with other global member organizations. Members of the American Burn Organization include doctors, nurses, social workers, researchers, hospitals, especially those that have burn centers, as well as physical and occupational therapists, among other medical practitioners. The American Burn Association is committed to improving the quality of care provided to burn victims. In conjunction with other scientific, medical and safety groups, the American Burn Association supports prevention efforts while facilitating research into the methods of treating burn injuries. In response to incidences of extensive burns that require life support the American Burn Association offers courses on advanced treatment and care/ some of the modules are web based and target health care and first responder personnel such as fire fighters, and physicians.

The American Burn Association has developed and implemented national burn care guidelines which include a program developed in conjunction with American College of Surgeons to help assess individual burn centers to ascertain that they meet the required standards. American Burn Association has helped facilitate advocacy forums to sensitize all relevant players on the need for collaborative disaster preparedness. They encourage legislative initiatives that support funding for burn care research and federal legislation for Medicare coverage of uninsured burn patients. The American Burn Association produces burn-related publications alongside educational courses and annual meetings that seek to educate the public on burn injuries with specific emphasis on prevention methods.

To govern the American Burn American Burn Association is a board of trustees that includes 14 members elected by the sitting members of the association. The Association provides its members with various awards to recognize their efforts, provides grants and opportunities to advance the research needs and education of burn care professionals. The American Burn Association offers an International Exchange Program through which members from other countries and especially those from developing countries can visit established burn centers of the American Burn Association in Canada or in the United States. In addition to the exchange program a Visiting Professor Program provides funds for educators, physicians and specialists to share their expertise in burns at any hosted burn center institution. Through its International Outreach Program the Association hopes to establish more burn centers worldwide with particular focus on becoming the global leader in burn care health and prevention.
